Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our professional vehicle driving service, auto transport alternatives, pricing, insurance, and how to get your car to Florida the stress-free way.
Our Services
5 questionsWe provide professional vehicle transportation services specifically tailored for snowbirds. Rather than enduring the long drive yourself, our experienced drivers will personally drive your car from your home — whether you're in New York, New Jersey, New England, or beyond — straight to your Florida destination.
Every trip is customized to your schedule, your vehicle, and your needs. You fly or travel however you prefer, and your car arrives safely at your Florida home, ready and waiting for you. It's the stress-free way to start your season in the sun.
A driveaway service is a professional vehicle transportation service where an experienced, vetted driver physically drives your car from one location to another — as opposed to traditional auto transport, where your vehicle is loaded onto a multi-car carrier truck.
With DriveCarToFlorida, you get a single dedicated driver who operates your vehicle with care, following your preferred route and timeline. Your car arrives at your door, not at a shipping terminal. You can even leave personal belongings inside the vehicle — something auto transport companies don't allow.
It's the premium, personalized alternative to car shipping, and it's why thousands of snowbirds trust us every season.
Yes. We were featured on CNBC in a story about retirees and snowbirds finding smart solutions for long-distance vehicle transport. You can read the full article here: Retirees Are Driving for Dollars — CNBC.
The coverage highlights the growing demand for professional driveaway services and how our approach has helped hundreds of clients avoid the exhausting drive to Florida.
Yes — we provide true door-to-door service. We pick up your vehicle at your home, office, or any agreed-upon location and deliver it directly to your Florida address. Whether you're in a city, a suburban neighborhood, or a more rural area, we'll coordinate pickup and delivery at your exact location.
Our most popular request from New York clients is actually having the vehicle dropped off at the airport so the owner can arrive and drive straight to their destination.
Absolutely. Many of our clients use our service in both directions — south to Florida in the fall and winter, and back north in the spring and summer. We can coordinate both legs of your seasonal migration so your car is always waiting for you at each end.
Round-trip arrangements are one of our most common requests, and many of our clients come back year after year for the convenience.
Routes & Destinations
5 questionsYou've found the right service. The New York / New Jersey to Florida corridor is our most popular route. We handle this trip regularly and know the I-95 corridor inside and out.
Our drivers will pick up your vehicle at your home, office, or any agreed-upon location in the New York metro area — including Long Island, Westchester, and northern New Jersey — and deliver it safely to your Florida address. Whether you're heading to West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Myers, Naples, Tampa, or anywhere in between, we've got you covered.
The trip from NYC to South Florida is approximately 1,280 miles and our drivers typically complete it in 1–2 days.
Planning your trip from New York to Florida?
Get a Free Quote →We regularly serve clients throughout Boston and the greater New England region, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine. The drive from Boston to Florida is roughly 1,400 miles — a demanding 20+ hour journey that we handle seamlessly for you.
Many of our New England clients are snowbirds heading to the Gulf Coast or Southeast Florida. You travel comfortably, and your car arrives safely at your Florida destination.
Yes — this is one of our most popular requests. We drive vehicles both ways: south to Florida in the fall and winter, and north to New Jersey, New York, New England, and beyond in the spring and summer.
Many clients book round-trip service so their car is waiting at each end of the season. Whether you need a single one-way trip or seasonal round-trip arrangements, we're happy to accommodate.
We serve clients from across the country, though our most popular routes are from the Northeast and Midwest to Florida. Our busiest corridors include:
Northeast: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland
Midwest: Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana
Other: California and other states upon request
If you don't see your state listed, reach out — we likely serve your area.
We deliver vehicles to destinations throughout Florida. The most popular include West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa, The Villages, and Miami.
Where you're headed often depends on where you're coming from. New York and New Jersey snowbirds tend to favor South Florida's Atlantic coast. Michigan and Midwest residents often choose the Gulf Coast communities like Fort Myers and Sarasota. No matter the destination, we'll deliver your vehicle right to your door.
Professional Driving Service vs. Auto Transport
4 questionsThey're fundamentally different approaches to getting your vehicle to Florida. Here's an honest side-by-side comparison:
| Factor | Auto Transport / Shipping | DriveCarToFlorida |
|---|---|---|
| How It Works | Car loaded onto truck with 6–9 other vehicles | Single dedicated driver operates your vehicle |
| Timeline | 7–14 days (carrier scheduling) | 1–4 days (flexible scheduling) |
| Personal Items | Not allowed (liability restriction) | Can stay in vehicle |
| Vehicle Condition | Exposed to elements; loading/unloading risk | Driven carefully, highway-only |
| Delivery | Terminal or depot pickup (you may need to travel) | Door-to-door at your address |
| Flexibility | Pickup windows, delays common | Exact date coordination |
| Insurance | Carrier insurance (complex claims) | Full coverage, simple process |
Traditional auto transport can work well if you're strictly price-focused or your vehicle doesn't run. But if you value convenience, flexibility, and personalized care, our professional driving service is the premium alternative that more and more snowbirds are choosing.
Several key advantages make our professional driving service the preferred choice for most snowbirds:
Your car isn't loaded on a truck. There's no risk of damage from loading, unloading, or road debris hitting your vehicle on a carrier. Your car is driven carefully by a professional, just as you would drive it yourself.
You can leave belongings inside. Auto transport companies prohibit personal items due to insurance restrictions. With our service, you can keep winter clothes, small household items, and seasonal supplies in your car — saving you the cost and hassle of shipping them separately.
It's faster and more flexible. Auto transport often takes 7–14 days, with vague pickup windows. We work with your exact schedule, and most trips are completed in 1–4 days.
True door-to-door service. Many auto transport companies deliver to terminals or depots. We pick up and deliver at your actual address.
We believe in being honest about when each option works best. Traditional car shipping may be a better fit if:
You're on a very tight budget and cost is the top priority. You have no timeline pressure and can wait 7–14 days. Your vehicle is inoperable and needs to be loaded onto a truck. Or you're transporting a very high-value collector car that should be enclosed in a covered carrier.
For most snowbirds making a seasonal migration, however, our driving service offers better value when you factor in the speed, flexibility, door-to-door convenience, and the ability to leave personal items in your vehicle.
Yes — and this is one of the biggest advantages of our service over traditional auto transport. Auto shipping companies strictly prohibit personal items because of insurance and liability restrictions.
With our driving service, you're welcome to leave items in your vehicle. Many clients transport winter clothes, small household goods, kitchen supplies, and seasonal items right in their car. It's like getting free shipping for your personal belongings.
We do ask that you avoid leaving valuables (jewelry, large amounts of cash), irreplaceable items (important documents, heirlooms), firearms, and hazardous materials.
Pricing & Costs
5 questionsThe cost for our professional driving service typically ranges from $600 – $1,700 depending on the origin location. For our most popular route — New York / New Jersey to Florida — the range is typically $800 – $1,200.
This covers the professional driving service. Fuel and tolls are the client's responsibility. We provide a clear, upfront quote so there are no surprises. Your final price depends on your exact pickup and delivery locations, time of year, vehicle type, and scheduling flexibility.

Get My Free Quote →Most people underestimate the true cost of driving themselves. Here's a realistic breakdown for a typical Northeast-to-Florida trip:
| Expense | Drive Yourself | Our Service |
|---|---|---|
| Gas | $300 – $500 | $800 – $1,200 (all-inclusive service fee) |
| Hotels (2 nights) | $200 – $400 | |
| Meals on road | $100 – $200 | |
| Tolls | $40 – $150 | |
| Wear & tear (IRS rate) | $800+ | |
| Total | $1,440 – $2,250 | $800 – $1,200 |
| Your time | 2–3 days of driving | Zero — fly or travel as you wish |
When you factor in the full cost — gas, hotels, meals, tolls, and the wear on your vehicle — the difference is often less than you'd expect. And you get 2–3 days of your life back. Our clients consistently tell us their time and peace of mind are worth far more than the marginal cost difference.
Our pricing covers the complete professional driving service: a vetted, experienced driver dedicated to your vehicle, full insurance coverage throughout the trip, GPS tracking, delivery coordination with your schedule, and communication throughout the journey.
Fuel and tolls are the client's responsibility and are paid separately. There are no hidden fees. The only variable is your exact pickup and delivery locations.
For standard passenger vehicles, we use FuelEconomy.gov to estimate based on your vehicle's specific make, model, and year. This gives the most accurate picture of what fuel will cost for your trip.
For smaller U-Haul trucks, we estimate around 8 MPG. For larger 26-foot trucks — especially those towing a vehicle — we estimate approximately 6 MPG.
These estimates help us give you an accurate total cost picture before you commit to anything.
Pricing can vary based on a few factors. Peak snowbird season — November and December — is our busiest time and may carry slightly higher rates due to demand. Very short-notice bookings (less than one week) may also cost more depending on driver availability.
Longer routes (such as California to Florida at 2,800+ miles) naturally cost more than shorter corridors. We recommend booking 3–4 weeks ahead during peak season for the best pricing and availability. We're always transparent about costs, and your quote will be firm before you commit.
How It Works
4 questionsOur process is straightforward — four simple steps:
Step 1: Quote & Agreement — You request a quote (takes about 60 seconds). We provide personalized pricing based on your route, vehicle, and timeline. Once you agree, everything is locked in.
Step 2: Travel Arrangements — We coordinate the logistics, including scheduling your driver's travel to your location. We work around your calendar.
Step 3: Vehicle Pickup & Inspection — On pickup day, our driver conducts a thorough walk-around inspection of your vehicle and documents its condition before departing.
Step 4: Delivery & Payment — Your vehicle is delivered to your Florida destination. A final inspection is done together, and payment is collected upon safe arrival.
Trip duration depends on the origin. For our most common routes from the Northeast (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut), the drive is approximately 1,150–1,400 miles and our drivers typically complete it in 1–2 days.
For Midwest origins (Michigan, Ohio, Illinois), the trip is similar in distance and takes 2–3 days. Longer routes like California to Florida (2,800+ miles) may take 3–4 days.
We always build in time for our drivers to rest properly. Safety is our top priority — we never rush a trip. You'll have communication throughout the journey so you always know where your vehicle is.
We keep preparation simple. Before your driver arrives, we recommend:
Maintenance basics: Ensure your vehicle has had a recent oil change, check tire pressure, and top off fluids. The car should be road-ready for a long highway trip.
Fill the gas tank: Start with a full tank so the driver can get underway without delay.
Remove personal toll tags and parking passes: To avoid accidental charges on your accounts during the trip.
Personal items: You're welcome to leave belongings in the car. Just avoid valuables, irreplaceables, and hazardous materials.
Take photos: Document your vehicle's condition before pickup for your own records. Our driver will also do a thorough inspection at pickup.
Yes — we routinely coordinate vehicle delivery with move-in dates, building access windows, HOA rules, and mover schedules. Whether you're relocating full-time or setting up a seasonal second home, we'll work around your timeline so your car arrives exactly when you need it.
Our most popular arrangement with New York clients is having the car delivered to the airport so the owner arrives and drives directly to their Florida home. Just let us know your schedule and we'll make it work.
Trucks & Moving Services
3 questionsYes. This is a very popular request that we accommodate regularly. Whether you've rented a U-Haul, Penske, or another moving truck, our drivers are experienced with larger vehicles and can handle the trip for you.
It's one less thing to worry about during what's already a hectic time. You handle the packing, we handle the driving.
Need someone to drive your moving truck to Florida?
Request a Moving Truck Quote →Absolutely. In addition to standard moving trucks, we also handle tow-behind combinations — for example, a U-Haul truck towing your personal car on a flatbed trailer, or a vehicle towing a utility trailer.
These setups are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure safety and proper handling. Just let us know your configuration — truck size, tow vehicle, trailer type — and we'll put together a plan and quote for you.
Yes. Many couples and families have two (or more) vehicles that need to get to Florida. We can coordinate multiple drivers and schedule pickups and deliveries so both cars arrive around the same time.
This is especially common with snowbird couples who each have their own car. Let us know your situation when you request a quote and we'll work out the logistics together.
Insurance & Safety
4 questionsYes, absolutely. Your vehicle is covered by our insurance policy from the moment our driver takes possession until delivery. This includes collision, comprehensive, and liability coverage.
We can provide a certificate of insurance upon request. Your peace of mind is important to us, and full insurance coverage is a standard part of every trip we make.
Safety always comes first. If severe weather affects the route, our driver will delay travel and keep you informed. We monitor weather forecasts throughout the journey and adjust timing as needed. Your vehicle and our driver's safety are never compromised for speed.
Most Northeast-to-Florida trips during peak season (October through March) encounter normal driving conditions for most of the route. Winter weather is most common in the first few hours after departure from northern states, and our drivers are experienced with these conditions.
All of our drivers are experienced professionals with clean driving records. They are background-checked, licensed, and have extensive experience with long-distance vehicle transport on the specific corridors they drive.
Many of our drivers have been with us for years and have completed hundreds of successful trips. They know the routes, the rest stops, and the seasonal conditions. Your vehicle is in experienced, reliable hands.
For official information on vehicle transportation safety standards and regulations, we recommend visiting the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
These agencies provide comprehensive resources on vehicle safety ratings, recalls, road safety best practices, and federal motor carrier regulations. If you have specific safety questions about our service, we're happy to discuss them directly.
Booking & Scheduling
4 questionsWe recommend booking 3–4 weeks in advance during peak snowbird season (November through January). This ensures we can match you with a driver for your preferred dates and gives us time to coordinate logistics.
During less busy periods (spring and summer), we've accommodated requests with as little as 3–5 days notice. However, booking early always gives you the best availability and allows for the most flexible scheduling.
We understand that plans change — it comes with the territory of seasonal travel. Contact us as soon as possible if you need to adjust your schedule, and we'll work with you to reschedule based on driver availability.
There may be a rescheduling fee if changes are made within 72 hours of your scheduled pickup, but we always try to be as flexible as possible. Life happens, and we'll do our best to accommodate.
Most snowbirds head south between October and December, with November being the busiest month. Return trips north typically happen in March through May.
If you have flexibility, booking in early October or late January can sometimes offer easier scheduling and availability. We recommend getting your quote and booking in early fall to ensure you get your preferred dates during the peak season rush.
We operate year-round, so if you need a car transported to or from Florida outside of the typical snowbird season, we can accommodate that too.
Getting started takes about 60 seconds. Simply request a free quote through our online form. Provide your pickup location, Florida delivery address, vehicle information, and your preferred dates.
We'll respond with a personalized quote — typically the same day, often within a few hours. From there, you can review the details, ask any questions, and book your trip when you're ready. No pressure, no obligation.
